Abstract:

SUMMARY 13 Consecutive patients who underwent endoscopic Nd - Y AG laser therapy for palliation of advanced esophageal cardnoma were treated between Oct 1989, and July 1991 , in Khatam - al -Anbia Hospital. All patients had severe dysphagia and conventional methods such as surgery , Radiotherapy and chemotherapy failed to treat them. Undoubtedly without laser therapy these patients did not seem to survive more than few weeks. The success rate for opening the obstruction was 86% with 2-3 sessions of laser therapy .Ten out of 13 patients survived at least for 8 months and were able to swallow solid food .Two patients had complications with bleeding and fistula to thrachea. One patient was not able to swallow despite relief of obstruction due to disfunction of esophagus secondary to cancer process.

Sclerosing Therapy of Esophageal Varices

SUMMARY Bleeding of esophageal varices have a high mortality rate, and medical management is usualy unsuccessful. Surgical methods such as vascular ligation or shunting are expensive. High risk procedures with high mortality. Endoscopic sclerotherapy was applied in 104 patients with acute bleeding of esophageal varices during a period of 5 years in a prospettive and retrospective study. Th...

A Clinical Study of Photodynamic Therapy for Superficial Esophageal Carcinoma by YAG-OPO Laser

A cooperative clinical study of photodynamic therapy (PDT) for superficial esophageal carcinoma was conducted at 6 medical institution. PHE (2mg/kg) with high tumor affinity was used as the oncotropic compound. The light source was a pulse wave YAG-OPO laser with high penetration into the tissue. Irradiation was performed at an energy density of 60-180 J/cm(2) 48-72 h after PHE administration. ...

Gene therapy for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

Despite improvement of surgical treatment and application of multi-modality therapies to advanced esophageal cancer, the prognosis is extremely poor in patients with T4 tumors. Based on the genetic background of esophageal cancer, we have developed various gene therapy strategies against human esophageal cancer cells. In this article, we reviewed molecular events of esophageal cancer and gene t...

Role of Brg1 in progression of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Objective(s): Epigenetic regulation of gene expression can be carried out through chromatin remodeling enzymes such as SWI/SNF. Brg1 also known as SMARCA4 is a catalytic subunit of SWI/SNF, which is necessary for MMPs expression. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are known as important player enzymes during tumor progression and metastasis. Aberrant epigenetic modification of chromatin should be...

Production of Cyclin D1 specific siRNAs by double strand processing for gene therapy of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma

Background: RNAi (RNA interference) is a new strategy in gene therapy and biotechnology which provides new promises in the treatment of different diseases such as cancer and viral diseases. CCND1 which is a key gene in cell cycle is amplified and over expressed in esophageal cancer. The objective of this study was production and siRNAs for CCND1, the key gene in cell cycle. Materials and Metho...

MICROSURGICA.L TREATMENT OF UPPER ESOPHAGEAL CARCINOMA (FREE JEJUNAL LOOP TRANSFER)

There are unfortunately a relatively large number of cases of esophageal cancer in Iran as well as other countries, and one of the most difficult problems facing surgeons is the reconstruction of the esophagus and restoration of its function after excision of the tumor. From 1978 to 1987,20 patients (16 male, 4 female) ranging in age from 22 to 68 years were surgically treated for squamous...
